  • First Landing State Park — Virginia's oldest state park. Trails through cypress swamps and live oaks, where the Jamestown settlers first set foot in 1607.
  • Cape Henry Lighthouse — 1792, oldest authorized US lighthouse. Climb it if energy allows — 191 steps for a panoramic Atlantic view.
  • ViBe Creative District — murals, indie shops, breweries, the Pink Dinghy. Lunch or coffee here if they want non-beach Virginia Beach.

  • Belle Isle — River island via foot bridge. Locals sunning on rocks, river rapids, free.
  • Carytown shopping — Nine blocks, ~230 independent shops. Best shopping stop on this whole trip.
  • VMFA — Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Free, world-class collection (Fabergé eggs, Rothkos, Picassos). Open till 9 PM Thursdays/Fridays.

From Virginia Beach, an easier 5 hours up the I-95 corridor — through DC at the midpoint. Late lunch in Baltimore, or push through to Reading Terminal in Philly. Settling in by mid-afternoon, with a real evening to spend.

From Richmond, 5 hours straight up I-95 — through DC and into Philly by mid-afternoon. Lunch in Baltimore, or skip ahead and graze through Reading Terminal Market when they arrive.

The long push. 10.5 hours of pure I-95. Leave Charleston by 7 AM, big lunch in Richmond around noon, and into Philly by 6:30 PM. Dinner around 7:45, a single bar after, sleep.

  • Rittenhouse Square — Walk it, sit on a bench, watch the city. Surrounded by the best shopping and the best old money in the city.
  • Frankford Avenue, Fishtown — The main artery of the neighborhood Brooklyn keeps trying to be. Indie shops, bars, La Colombe HQ, vintage stores.
  • Italian Market on East Passyunk — 9th Street market, oldest continuously-operating outdoor market in the country. Less touristy than Reading Terminal.
  • Spruce Street Harbor Park — Hammocks over the Delaware in summer. Open Memorial Day weekend onward.
  • Liberty Bell + Independence Hall — Touristy, free, 20 minutes if they want it ticked off. Skip in good conscience if not.
  • Magic Gardens — Isaiah Zagar's mosaic alleyway on South Street. Ticketed, $15, worth it for the photos alone.
